Freshwater frogfish (Antennarius biocellatus) - reservation required
The five-legged tiger fish lures prey closer. The bait is on the top of its head, just above its very large, upward-facing mouth. The bait is made up of the first spine of the dorsal fin. With a spine modified into a rod or stalk (called a trichome) and a fluffy-like fleshy tip, this attractive fishing lure (esca) also twists, twitches and waves so it looks helpless and delicious of mixed vegetables. The two-spotted frogfish itself is motionless and looks like just another rock or other harmless object. The creature that unknowingly tried to eat the bait was eaten by the two-spotted frogfish instead. Prey is usually swallowed in one gulp by the two-spotted frogfish's large mouth. In less than a second, it can open its mouth with great fanfare, making it one of the fastest catching fish in the animal kingdom.
