The Queen Tetra's body is primarily silvery white, with flattened sides and a rounded, wide abdomen. Its body is slightly tall, and a thin, dark blue longitudinal stripe appears on the latter half of its body axis, interspersed with some tiny horizontal stripes. The anal fin rays of male Queen Tetras protrude and extend into a filamentous shape, which is quite splendid, but females do not have this characteristic. Both male and female Queen Tetras have a dark brown dorsal line running along their backs.

If the tank's circulation is not good enough, organic matter is too high, or aquatic plants have just been trimmed, an oily film can easily form on the water surface. In severe cases, this can affect light penetration. At this time, Queen Tetras will hover near the water surface, sucking up the oily film from the tank's water surface with their mouths, becoming mini oil film removers. They can be considered a functional fish species. Their ability to clear oil film from the water surface is a major advantage of the Queen Tetra.
