The spiny black ant measures 6.0–6.9 mm in length, with a black body, sometimes tinged with brown. During active seasons, they often build nests in trees near water sources , frequently gathering in areas where aphids thrive, and are highly territorial. Nesting activity is most frequent after rain, at which time a large number of worker ants carry male pine flowers, grass clippings, insect frass, or sand particles, and use silk to bond the nesting materials. A nest can generally be built in 3-6 days.

Spiny black ants enjoy honeydew secreted by insects such as aphids and scale insects, sweet substances secreted by plant glands like Schefflera and red beans, and some small arthropods.
