黃頭側頸龜成體背甲橢圓形，頂部隆起，幼龜背甲淡橄欖色，成龜轉為灰黑色，雌龜背甲可達45厘米以上，雄龜較小。頭部黑褐色，有黃色斑紋，吻鈍，眼大。四肢灰褐色，後肢邊緣有3枚大鱗片，尾短。其為水棲龜，喜弱酸性水質，畏寒不能冬眠，適宜水溫25 - 32℃。以植物性食物為主，也食小魚蝦等，性情溫和，愛日光浴。
