Phasmatodea (stick insects)

Phasmatodea, also known as stick insects or phasmids, are insects that resemble branches or leaves and are known for their excellent camouflage abilities. Stick insects have slender bodies, similar to bamboo branches or twigs, and some species are flat like leaves. Most are green, brown, or gray, blending in perfectly with their surroundings. Their body length varies from a few centimeters to tens of centimeters, with some species exceeding 60 centimeters. They are primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, especially Southeast Asia, South America, and Australia. They mostly inhabit forests, shrubs, and other densely vegetated areas, relying on mimicry to evade predators. They are herbivores, mainly feeding on leaves, and some species can damage crops. Most are nocturnal, remaining still during the day and foraging at night. Their appearance and behavior highly mimic plants; when threatened, they play dead or sway with the wind.

Care suggestions:

• Choose a container with sufficient height to allow the stick insect to molt successfully. Storage boxes or specialized mesh enclosures are good choices, and the container should have branches or mesh for the stick insect to climb
• Most stick insects thrive in temperatures of 20-25°C. Humidity can be maintained by misting; daily misting helps stick insects molt smoothly, but be careful to avoid excessive dampness that can lead to mold
• Stick insects feed on plant leaves. Guava leaves are preferred by many species (such as the Indian stick insect and the Annam stick insect). Other common choices include mango leaves, mulberry leaves, camphor leaves, hibiscus, and ivy
