The Chinese peacock (Papilio bianor) is a star species in the Papilionidae family, highly prized for its ornamental value and widely distributed in East Asia. Its elegant adult form has a wingspan of 6-10cm and is known for its unique blue-green metallic luster. The pupal stage is a critical period for the development of the Chinese peacock, during which internal structures such as wings and reproductive organs gradually mature. After approximately 10-20 days, the Chinese peacock will emerge from the pupa. Initially, its wings are wrinkled, but they will slowly unfold and harden. Once fully unfurled, it can fly freely.
Morphological characteristics after emerging as an adult butterfly:
- Male butterfly: The wings are black-based, covered with shimmering blue-green scales, and the hindwings have prominent tails.
- Female butterfly: The colors are softer than the male, and some individuals may have a yellowish-green luster on their hindwings.
- Common features: The hindwings have red eyespots, an important feature for deterring predators.
Pupal care instructions:
- Pupae do not need to eat; simply place them in a cool, shaded indoor area.
- Maintain environmental humidity (lightly mist once daily).
- Avoid direct sunlight and drastic temperature changes (22-28℃ is ideal).
- The pupa needs to be hung, maintaining a natural suspended state.
- Once the butterfly pupa is placed, do not touch it with your hands. You can observe its internal development by shining a light on it.
- Butterfly pupae are fragile during development; handle with care.
- Adult butterflies can be fed sugar water or fruit juice. Their lifespan is about 3-4 weeks, or they can be released.
Note: Chinese peacock pupae can be brown or green. This is a protective coloration, designed to blend into the environment and avoid detection by predators. The color of the pupa is shipped randomly.
Not 100% of pupae will successfully emerge as butterflies; the general success rate for adult emergence is 35%-70%, which is a normal natural hatching phenomenon. Some pupae may move, some may not, but all pupae are alive. If the pupa is damaged or fails to hatch, it will smell and leak liquid.
