Weaver ants use silk spun by their larvae to roll up fresh leaves and build "ant nests" for habitation. Large colonies of weaver ants generally have multiple satellite nests. Weaver ants are naturally aggressive and adept at preying on various insects; they are also often used in agricultural production for biological pest control.
Weaver ants are agile, hunt cooperatively, and offer many interesting aspects for observation, making them rising stars in the pet ant community. The nesting process of weaver ants is quite fascinating: once they choose a nest site, they will stretch their bodies to connect branches or leaves, then contract their bodies to pull the branches and leaves together. They will also gently bite larvae with their mandibles, forcing them to spin silk, which acts as an adhesive to bind the branches and leaves, ultimately weaving a spherical nest in the tree.
In the wild, they prefer to inhabit warm climate zones, living an arboreal life and building nests in trees with dense branches and leaves. They can also weave interesting nests in artificial breeding environments.
