Nepenthes ampullaria
Nepenthes ampullaria is a small and changeable pitcher plant, with pitchers ranging from solid green to red-spotted to almost black. It funnels snacks into digesters diluted by rainwater. Why dilute? The cover of N. ampullaria is thin, located away from the mouth, and does not protect it from rain. The open-door policy of these chunky pitchers also allows leaf fragments from overhead plants to fall into the openings, where they break down with the help of mutualists.
