They mostly live in shallow water areas such as mountain ponds, rice fields and springs, and eat invertebrates. During the breeding period, the male fish makes a foam nest and collects the eggs in it. The male fish has the habit of protecting the nest. It is small in size and is a famous ornamental fish because of its bright color and aggressive males.
