Indian Leafwing Butterfly Chrysalis - Hatchable Butterfly Chrysalis / Kids' Pet / Indoor Rearing Observation Science Education Non-toxic Insect (Kallima inachus)
[Adult] Wingspan: approximately 6-10cm
[Food] Sugar water, nectar, fruit juice
[Emergence Time] Pupation to emergence takes approximately 10-20 days
[Adult Lifespan] 3-4 weeks
The dead leaf butterfly (Kallima inachus) is one of nature's most amazing masters of camouflage, belonging to the Nymphalidae family of insects, widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. The adult butterfly is medium to large in size, with a wingspan of approximately 6-10cm. The pupal stage is a critical period for the dead leaf butterfly's growth and development, during which internal structures such as wings and reproductive organs gradually mature. After about [missing number] days, the dead leaf butterfly will emerge from the pupa. Initially, its wings are wrinkled, but as blood fills them, they slowly expand and harden. Once fully expanded, the butterfly can fly freely.
Adult morphological characteristics
- Ventral side of wings: Perfectly mimics the shape of a dead leaf, including veins and mold spots, an exquisite example of mimicry in nature.
- Dorsal side of wings: Bright blue and orange markings.
- Sexual dimorphism: Males have brighter coloration, females are slightly larger.
The dead leaf butterfly symbolizes life's metamorphosis and intelligent camouflage. It possesses both ecological value and scientific significance, making it a star species for insect observation, nature education, and ecological research.
Pupal care instructions:
- Pupae do not need to eat; simply place them in a cool, shaded indoor area.
- Maintain environmental humidity (lightly mist with water once daily).
- Avoid direct sunlight and drastic temperature changes (22-28℃ is ideal).
- The pupa needs to be hung to maintain a natural downward-hanging position.
- Once the butterfly pupa is placed, avoid touching it with your hands. You can observe the internal development by shining a light on it.
- Butterfly pupae are relatively fragile during development, so handle with care.
- After emergence, adult butterflies can be fed sugar water or fruit juice. Their lifespan is about 3-4 weeks, or they can be released.
Note: Dead leaf butterfly pupae can be dark brown or grayish-brown. This is a protective coloration that helps the pupa blend into its environment and avoid predators. Pupa color will be shipped randomly. Not 100% of pupae will successfully emerge into butterflies. The general probability of adult emergence is 35%-70%, which is a normal natural hatching phenomenon. Some pupae may move, while others do not, but all pupae are alive. If a pupa is damaged or fails to hatch, it will smell and leak fluid.
