Kaempferia galanga
Kaempferia japonica is a perennial herbaceous plant with massive rhizomes underground, fragrant, and no above-ground stems; a few basal oval leaves, with petioles extending downward into sheaths; spikes of 4-12-year-old flowers emerge from the leaf sheaths in autumn. White flowers, fragrant; capsule oblong.
It is native to maritime Southeast Asia, that is, Malaysia and Indonesia, which are often called Nanyang. It has been used as a spice locally. It is mainly grown in the south of China, such as central Guangdong Province and Guangxi Province, and is also found in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. It is widely cultivated, concentrated in the south of Taiwan.
