The normal hognose snake, a member of the Colubridae family, is a small, fossorial snake of natural coloration. Its body color is earthy, with a light brown, yellowish-brown to reddish-brown back interwoven with irregular dark brown blotches. The belly alternates between black and white. Its snout uniquely upturns like a pig's nose. It has a short, stout, and rounded body, and moves gently and slowly. As a classic choice among beginner pet snakes, the normal hognose snake is known for its exaggerated defensive displays, yet possesses a stable and less aggressive temperament. It is suitable for keeping in a dry environment with reptile sand or aspen shavings as substrate and a hideout. Note its diet primarily consists of amphibians; feeding thawed fuzzie mice is recommended as a substitute.
