The "retro-" in the species name of fountain pepper (retrospiralis) means backward, and "spiralis" means spiral. It describes its spathes that first rotate clockwise and then open counterclockwise. It is a slender aquatic plant with very long leaves, some up to 50cm long in natural waters. Fountain peppergrass is elegant and beautiful in the water. It is one of the most popular aquatic plants in the genus Capsicum.
