Originating from Lake Malawi in East Africa, this is a medium-sized cichlid that grows to 12 cm. There are at least 5 regional variants. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae. Blue is the basic body color, with very strong contrast, and the body patterns even turn dark blue-black. Males can be aggressive and prone to fighting, making them difficult to keep with other species. They are a popular export fish.
