小牛毛草為一年生挺水性草本植物，匍匐根莖極細，稈叢生非常細密。生長高度主要受到照度的影響，當照度強時，它就長得矮小；反之就長得略高，但通常不會超過5釐米。迷你牛毛和普通牛毛的區別在於一是高度更為矮小，二是葉子比較彎曲，可能是從普通牛毛改良而來或是其變種。迷你牛毛種植於水族箱中是一種非常好的前景草，養殖比較容易，主要靠其絲狀匍匐莖在泥中延伸生殖，用水草泥養迷你牛毛氈很容易形成一片毛絨絨的綠色草坪。適當修剪和添加二氧化碳會促使其長出更多新芽。
種植方法：
- 將魚缸底部鋪滿水草泥將種子平均撒在缸中
- 將種子平均撒在缸中
- 噴水，使基質保持濕潤
- 溫度儘量保持在24-30度
- 1星期左右發芽後，再沿缸壁緩慢加水
