Eastern Painted Turtle ( Chrysemys picta picta )
The carapace of the Eastern Painted Turtle is smooth and flat oval. It is usually the darkest among the three subspecies of Painted Turtle: East, South and West. It is dark brown and almost black. It is also the only turtle found in North America. A carapace with scutes arranged in rows. Unlike most turtles, whose scutes are staggered, the anterior vertebral scutes actually line up with the costal scutes. This species characteristic makes it one of the easiest to identify among living turtles.
