Live Dragonfly Larvae - Pet Ecology Observation
Dragonfly nymphs are the aquatic larval stage of insects in the order Odonata. Their bodies are typically dark brown or green, providing effective camouflage that allows them to blend perfectly with the sand, gravel, or silt at the bottom of the water. They usually feed on small aquatic organisms such as mosquito larvae, water fleas, small fish, and tadpoles, earning them the nickname "underwater hunters." The larval stage of dragonfly nymphs is long, lasting from a few months to as long as three to five years, depending on the species and environment. During this period, they undergo 10 to 15 molts, with each molt marking a stage of growth, as their size and wing buds gradually enlarge. When fully mature, they choose a clear night or early morning to crawl onto plant stems or rocks extending above the water surface, where they emerge from their old exoskeleton and metamorphose into adult dragonflies.
Note: Dragonfly species are random after maturation.
Care recommendations:
- For substrate, choose fine sand or small pebbles, spread 2-5cm thick.
- Hiding places must be provided; driftwood, bamboo tubes, pottery pots, Cabomba, Myriophyllum aquaticum, and broadleaf aquatic plants are all good choices for hiding places.
- Provide emergence supports that extend 10-15cm above the water surface.
- Optimal water temperature is 15-28℃; do not use tap water directly for rearing.
- Dragonfly nymphs can eat red worms, water fleas, brine shrimp, small fish fry, etc.
