The red striated rat has a wider band extending diagonally from the dorsal fin to the caudal peduncle, and most of the caudal fin is transparent. The forehead of a David rat in good condition will have a slight orange tint, and the color is not as intense as the red-headed rat. Sexing of ratfish is difficult, as mature females appear more rounded than males.
