Care Instructions:
- They prefer spacious, well-ventilated environments; glass tanks or reptile enclosures can be used.
- Substrate is essential; coco coir, bottom sand, and moss are recommended. Provide driftwood and hiding spots (coco bricks, bottom sand, moss, etc., available online).
- They are good climbers, so the enclosure needs to be covered to prevent escape.
- It is recommended to prepare a separate molting box with thick coco coir for them to bury themselves.
- Insufficient humidity can cause gill dryness, so regular misting is required.
- Hermit crabs cannot drink tap water directly; it will be fatal. Purified water can be used.
- Must provide both a freshwater bowl and a saltwater bowl.
- Daily, you can feed them fruits, fish and shrimp meat, or specialized hermit crab food.
- When they are changing shells, you can offer them shells that are 1-2cm longer and have an opening 1-2cm wider than their old shell.
(Note: The color of Coenobita cavipes can change with the number of molts; juveniles are usually dark brown or tea-colored.)
Coenobita cavipes is a terrestrial hermit crab widely distributed in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. This species is more drought-tolerant compared to others. Coenobita cavipes has a relatively simple body coloration, predominantly dark brown and tea brown. Juveniles are generally similar in appearance to adults. Coenobita cavipes inhabit forested areas further inland and are rarely found near the coast except during breeding season. They forage at night among bushes or rocks, are omnivorous, and primarily eat fruit. To facilitate living inland, they often inhabit the shells of African giant snails. Coenobita cavipes are relatively shy and typically nocturnal, often burying themselves in the substrate and only emerging at night.
