Japanese carpenter ants are active outside the nest, and within a certain temperature range, their activity increases as the temperature rises and decreases as the temperature falls.
Japanese carpenter ants are more active on sunny days and less so on rainy days. Before and after heavy rain, the activity of worker ants increases; before rain, they mainly build dams around the nest entrance to seal it. After rain, they open the nest entrance, repair the nest, and carry soil particles out. Large worker ants emerge to forage, usually alone, but occasionally in groups, carrying large prey. Their foraging routes generally extend 10-20 meters from the nest, mainly searching for aphids, honeydew, flower buds and shoots of coniferous and broad-leaved trees, and small animals (including insects) on the ground or on herbaceous and woody plants.
