The blue-tailed salamander is a relatively small salamander, generally only 8-10 cm in size as an adult.
Blue-tailed salamanders vary greatly in color, ranging from dark brown to golden yellow. There is usually a faint orange line along the vertebral ridge. The abdomen ranges in color from yellow to orange, often with black spots.
Blue-tailed salamanders mostly feed on earthworms, molluscs, insect larvae, etc. at the bottom of the water. It also feeds on tadpoles, small fish, water fleas, etc.
