The Oscar fish, also known as Astronotus ocellatus, is a large cichlid native to the Amazon River basin in South America. It has a robust body, growing up to 45 cm in length, and is characterized by its distinctive "thick lips" and vibrant coloration. Its most striking feature is a black "eyespot" with an orange-red ring located on the caudal peduncle, which not only serves to confuse predators but also gives rise to its vivid common names such as "pig fish" and "flower pig fish." Oscars are intelligent and highly interactive, capable of recognizing their owners, earning them the nickname "water puppy" among aquarium enthusiasts. They are carnivorous predators, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects.

Care Guide:

  • Provide ample space; the tank must have a lid to prevent jumping.
  • The main diet should consist of high-quality carnivorous pellets, small fish, and shrimp. Feed regularly and in moderation, ensuring all food is consumed within 5 minutes, and avoid overfeeding.
  • The ideal water temperature is 24-28°C, and neutral water (pH 6.5-7.5) is suitable. Stability is key; when changing water, the temperature difference should not exceed 2°C.
  • They are relatively aggressive and territorial, making them unsuitable for cohabitation with smaller fish.
  • Provide some smooth driftwood or rocks for exploration and territory establishment.
