Albino checkered garter snakes eat fish and meat, don't need to be fed pinkies, and can be kept communally.
Garter snakes are a group of slender, small to medium-sized colubrid snakes primarily found in North America. Their most distinctive feature is the several longitudinal stripes running from head to tail, resembling parallel garters, with diverse color combinations. Most garter snakes are docile and are among the most common snake species in many regions. They are one of the few snakes with some cold tolerance, with some species even capable of surviving harsh winters through communal hibernation. Garter snakes have a wide-ranging diet, preying on various small animals such as earthworms, fish, and amphibians. They are highly adaptable, gentle, and easy to care for.
Care recommendations:
- Enclosure setup: The container should be transparent and well-ventilated. Substrates can include coco fiber, bark, or paper towels.
- Temperature settings: There should be a warm zone and a cool zone, with the hotspot around 28-30°C and the cool zone 22-24°C. Humidity should be maintained at 50%-70%.
- Feeding management: The main diet can consist of fish such as capelin, guppies, tilapia, or chicken hearts. Do not feed goldfish, loaches, or minnows (carp family fish). (If you are not afraid of pinky mice, feeding them is also a good option.)
- They can be cohabitated, but ensure ample space and provide multiple basking spots and hides for each snake. Cohabitating snakes should be of similar sex and size to reduce competition and stress.
