Its bark is thin, smooth, and reddish-brown, more vibrant than that of the Natsutsubaki (Stewartia pseudocamellia). The leaves and branches have silky white hairs, and similar hairs on the outside of the flowers are a distinguishing feature from Natsutsubaki.
