龍蝨隸屬鞘翅目龍蝨科。成體呈橢圓形，背甲多為黑褐並帶光澤，部分種類翅鞘兩側綴有橙黃色條紋。成蟲與幼蟲皆為肉食性，善捕食水生昆蟲、小魚及蝌蚪，亦會清理水中屍體，因此有「水中清道夫」之稱。飼養時需加蓋防止飛逸，缸內佈置水草與露出水面的沉木供其休息，水溫不宜超過30℃。龍蝨行動敏捷，能同時在水、陸、空活動，為生態缸增添動態觀賞趣味。
