Sichuan pepper, a member of the citrus family, is the sole designated host plant for the citrus swallowtail butterfly larvae. The larvae can only obtain their unique aromatic oil components by feeding on leaves of Sichuan pepper and other Rutaceae plants, enabling them to grow and develop normally, accumulate defense substances, and eventually pupate into butterflies.
