The Master of Mimicry, the Mossy Frog - Rainforest Terrarium Design (Theloderma corticale)
The mossy frog, an amphibian belonging to the family Rhacophoridae and genus Theloderma, is renowned for its exceptional camouflage. Its skin is covered with irregular green, brown, and even black warty bumps, whose texture and color closely resemble moss growing on damp rocks, allowing it to perfectly blend into its habitat. This species is native to the rainforests and streams near caves in the karst regions of northern Vietnam. They are arboreal, with well-developed toe pads that enable them to climb adeptly. Mossy frogs are docile and primarily nocturnal, feeding on small invertebrates. Their unique camouflage is not only a powerful tool for evading predators but also makes them a highly captivating species for amphibian enthusiasts.
- Choose a tall enclosure and furnish it with branches, leaves, and driftwood for them to inhabit.
- Maintain humidity in the habitat above 80%, and ensure good ventilation.
- Provide clean water; a shallow water dish must be placed to offer fresh drinking water.
- They eat live prey; suitable staple foods include appropriately sized crickets, fruit flies, or mealworms.
- Most are suited to live in temperatures between 18-24°C.
- Provide ample hiding spots in the enclosure, such as under plant leaves or artificial hides, to give them a sense of security.
