Surinam horned frog (Ceratophrys cornuta)
The Surinam horned frog, also known as the Amazon horned frog, is a large horned frog widely distributed in northern South America, known for its fierce temperament and unique appearance. Adult females can reach up to 12cm in length, while males are slightly smaller, around 7cm. Its most prominent features are the well-developed triangular fleshy horn-like protrusions above its eyes and a huge mouth that is almost 1.6 times its body length, capable of swallowing prey of comparable size, including insects, birds, lizards, rodents, and even other frogs of its own kind. Its body color is variable, commonly brown, green, or orange-yellow, with butterfly-shaped patterns on its back and a deep black throat, giving it a powerful and imposing look. It is an excellent choice for amphibian and reptile pet enthusiasts.
Care Suggestions:
- They have low activity levels, so a well-ventilated glass tank or plastic enclosure is sufficient.
- Substrate can be coconut fiber, akadama soil, or horned frog soil (coconut fiber is available on our website).
- You can set up a shallow water area and place a hide to simulate its natural environment.
- Maintain a temperature of 25-28°C and humidity of 70-80%, avoid direct sunlight.
- Use chlorine-free water, and change the water every 2 days.
- They prefer live prey, such as crickets, small fish, earthworms, and pinkie mice (for adults).
- Do not keep multiple frogs together, as they may bite and eat each other.
(Note: Surinam horned frogs have a fierce temperament; do not hand-feed to avoid bites.)
