Sandfish skink (Scincus scincus)

The sandfish skink is a species of skink in the genus Scincus, measuring 18-20 cm in length. Its body color ranges from yellow to orange with black to brown transverse bands. Its wide claws increase the contact area to reduce resistance when moving through sand. Its body shape and smooth scales are adapted to desert environments, and its movement resembles a fish swimming. This species is mainly distributed in the desert areas of North Africa and the Middle East, primarily active as a diurnal burrower. It can "swim" through sand when digging tunnels. The sandfish skink feeds mainly on insects and is ovoviviparous. Females lay 3-5 eggs per clutch, with an incubation period of approximately 60-75 days.

Care Guide:

• Choose a spacious, low-height enclosure, prioritizing floor space.
• It is recommended to set up a temperature gradient with a basking area of 33-35°C and a cool area of 25-27°C. Nighttime temperatures should not drop below 18-24°C.
• Maintain low humidity (around 25%) and provide a shallow water dish for drinking. The environment must not be humid.
• Carnivorous, primarily feeding on various insects (e.g., crickets, mealworms). Ensure calcium supplementation.
• If temperatures consistently drop below 15°C in winter, they will enter brumation and stop eating.
