Yellow-spotted river turtle (Podocnemis unifilis)
The adult yellow-headed sideneck turtle has an oval, raised carapace. Juvenile turtles have a light olive-colored carapace, which turns grayish-black as they mature. Female turtles can have carapaces over 45 cm, while males are smaller. The head is dark brown with yellow markings, a blunt snout, and large eyes. The limbs are grayish-brown, with three large scales on the edge of the hind limbs, and a short tail. It is an aquatic turtle that prefers slightly acidic water, is sensitive to cold, and cannot hibernate. The optimal water temperature is 25 - 32°C. Its diet consists mainly of plant-based foods, but it also eats small fish and shrimp. It has a docile temperament and enjoys basking in the sun.
