The common mime butterfly (Papilio clytia) is a highly ornamental swallowtail butterfly widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia. The adult body size is medium to large, with a wingspan of approximately 6-9.5cm. The pupal stage is a critical period for the common mime's growth and development, during which internal structures such as wings and reproductive organs gradually mature. After about 8-17 days, the common mime will eclose from the pupa. Initially, its wings are wrinkled; as blood fills them, they will slowly expand and harden. Once fully expanded, it can fly freely.

Variable forms after eclosion:

  • (Male) Male butterfly: The wing surface is predominantly black, with seven white spots arranged transversely on the hindwing, resembling a jade belt, elegant and striking.
  • (Female) Female butterfly: Exhibits polymorphism, with some individuals having red markings on their wings, mimicking toxic butterflies to deter predators.

The common mime butterfly symbolizes loyal love and auspicious beauty, possessing both ecological and cultural value, making it a popular species for butterfly viewing, popular science education, and ecological research.

Pupal care instructions:

  1. Pupae do not need to eat; they can be kept indoors. In summer, avoid direct sunlight, direct air conditioning, and excessively low temperatures (25-30°C is sufficient).
  2. Upon receipt, the pupa needs to be hung manually, keeping it suspended.
  3. Spray a little water near the pupa daily to maintain humidity.
  4. Once the butterfly pupa is placed, it should not be touched again. Its internal development can be observed by shining a light on it.
  5. Butterfly pupae are relatively fragile during development, so handle with care.
  6. In summer, eclosion typically occurs in about a week due to higher temperatures.
  7. After eclosion, adult butterflies can be fed sugar water or milk. Their lifespan is about 2-3 weeks, and they can also be released.

Note: Common mime pupae come in brown and green, which are protective colors allowing the pupae to blend into their environment and avoid detection by predators. Pupa colors are shipped randomly. After pupa metamorphoses into a butterfly, genders are differentiated, and wing patterns will have some differences.

Not 100% of pupae will successfully transform into butterflies; the general eclosion rate is 35%-70%, which is a normal natural hatching phenomenon. Some pupae move, some do not, but all pupae are alive. If a pupa is damaged or fails to hatch, it will smell and leak fluid.

Swallowtail larvae will be available after April when summer arrives.
Shipping time: Available from April to September, dormant after October.
(Actual purchase will be young larvae, which will become green, medium-to-large larvae after some time of rearing.)
