日本矮麥冬玉龍草為沿階草屬植物，具有塊根，根系發達，根長可及20公分以上,乳白色略粗，幾無莖，植株矮小，簇生成半球團狀，高約10公分。 單葉，叢生，葉片長10~20公分，寬0.2~0.3公分，狹線形，葉基銳，葉尖鈍，葉緣粗糙，墨綠色，上下表面光滑，下表面多少帶白粉狀，脈5~7條。 總狀花序，每苞花10朵，花莖直立，淡紫色至白色。 蒴果，徑約0.5公分，種子深藍色。
玉龍草生長及分生迅速，栽植地面可迅速長成一片濃密加地氈狀的草皮，對水土保持有特別優良之效果。耐陰性強、且較一般草皮耐踐踏，是極佳之地被植材。
