The sharp-billed crocodile is the most common species of gar. The body shape is weird and looks like a living fossil. The body is long and cylindrical. The mouth protrudes forward and is long, flat like a duck's bill, with hard upper and lower jaw plates and hard teeth in the middle, like a crocodile's mouth. The center of the back of the body is covered with vertical dark stripes from the eyes to the tail. The skin is covered with hard scales and the skin is thick. The dorsal fin is moved back to the caudal peduncle, symmetrical up and down with the anal fin. There are black stripes on the tail fin.
