Freshwater mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) - Purifies water and consumes green algae
Freshwater mussels, or "melon seeds" as they are nicknamed, are not the snacks we eat daily, but are named for their small, oval shape, which closely resembles melon seeds. They are natural purifiers in freshwater ecosystems, filtering plankton and organic debris from the water through siphon action, effectively purifying water quality. They are often introduced into aquariums as natural cleaners. These miniature shellfish are typically only 1 to 3 centimeters long, with shells that are mostly dark brown or blackish-brown, making them quite appealing. Due to their strong adaptability, low maintenance requirements, and the fact that they do not eat aquatic plants, they have become a popular functional ornamental organism in planted tanks and small aquariums, thus securing a place in the ornamental aquatic field.
Care Suggestions:
- Keep in stable, clean water with sufficient dissolved oxygen, and avoid drastic water quality fluctuations.
- They feed on plankton, algae, and organic debris in the water, so artificial supplementation with fine foods like spirulina powder is required.
- Place rough-surfaced stones, ceramic tiles, or specialized mussel ropes at the bottom of the tank to provide a stable attachment substrate for them, which aligns with their natural habits.
