Jeweled Lacerta (Timon lepidus)

The jewelled lizard, a large lizard species native to southwestern Europe, is considered the largest lizard species in Europe. Adults can reach 60 to 80 centimeters in length. Their base color is green, adorned with black spots, and they have distinctive rows of pale blue spots on their sides, which is where their name comes from. They inhabit open woodlands, scrublands, and olive groves and are diurnal animals. They have a varied diet, primarily consuming various insects and snails, but also preying on small lizards, rodents, and even eating some plant fruits. Notably, observations have shown that they adapt relatively well to humans in captivity and exhibit a certain level of interactivity.

• The more space, the better. Good ventilation is required, and the top must be secure, as they are strong climbers and diggers and can escape.
• Hot and cool zones should be set up, and the nighttime temperature should ideally not fall below 20°C.
• Maintain humidity at 50%-70%. A large water dish and regular misting are required to ensure they have drinking water and to aid in shedding.
• Jewelled lizards have a varied diet, primarily animal-based. Crickets, Dubia roaches, and red runner roaches are ideal choices. Calcium powder supplements should be provided regularly.
• Use moisture-retaining substrates such as forest floor or sterile soil, laid thickly for digging. Provide multiple sturdy basking platforms and branches for climbing, as well as hides to increase their sense of security.
• Clean feces and food debris promptly, change substrate regularly, and provide fresh water in the dish.
