Anoplolepis gracilipes have a broad diet; initially known as scavengers, they were later referred to as hunters. They prey on isopods, myriapods, mollusks, spiders, insects, and even larger crustaceans, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
They also belong to a polygynous colony structure. Their antennae and three pairs of legs appear very slender, hence the name "long-legged" ants. Their bodies are brown and slightly translucent, and upon closer inspection, distinct stripes can be seen on their abdomens. These ants are opportunistic foragers; in addition to actively hunting, they will also carry any food or animal carcasses found in the wild back to their nest.
