The Emperor Tetra has a robust body shape and a variable body color, generally lead gray. The central axis of the body features a double row of colored bands: the lower one is a striking thick black band that extends to the very center of the caudal fin; the upper one is a mix of purplish-blue or blue colored bands. Although the Emperor Tetra is a characin, it lacks an adipose fin (the small second fin behind the dorsal fin), and its caudal peduncle is long, thus its anal fin is very elongated. The caudal fin of the Emperor Tetra is forked, with an elongated central filament that is connected to the black body stripe and is also black.
