Elephantnose fish are freshwater fish that live in tropical freshwater regions of Africa, named for their trunk-like lower jaw. The tip of their "trunk" has sensitive barbels, and their body is dark brown to black with light-colored transverse stripes. They have electroreceptors (weak electric field generating organs used for navigation and communication) on their tail. They are nocturnal feeders, using their tubular lower jaw to sift through the substrate for insect larvae, crustaceans, and small invertebrates. When kept as pets, they should be fed bloodworms, daphnia, and sinking pellets.
