紅斜紋鼠有著一條較寬的帶紋自背鰭斜向延伸至尾柄，而尾鰭大部份是透明的，狀態良好的大衛鼠額頭會泛出微微的橙色，色彩不如紅頭鼠強烈。鼠魚的性別鑑定較困難，成熟的雌魚外觀上比雄魚更圓潤。
