巴西紅扇孔雀魚是有點像紅尾禮服孔雀魚，不過與紅尾禮服孔雀魚相比較，它的紅色更加鮮豔，更加厚重。一般尾巴還有背鰭比較大。看上去就像折起來的扇子，所以也叫巴西摺扇孔雀魚。它的紅色基因表現比較強大，所以在黑色的腰身上還可以看到紅色的存在。
孔雀魚性情溫和，能與溫和的中小性型熱帶魚混養，平時活潑好動，對環境的適應能力十分強韌。孔雀魚適應性很強，喜弱堿性的水，孔雀魚食性廣泛，吃浮遊動物，小昆蟲和碎屑。飼養條件下動物性餌料和植物性餌料都可食用，鮮魚蟲最宜。
