Most ratfish live in waters such as streams with fast currents. Ratfish can only maintain an active state and appropriate amount of exercise in an environment with strong currents. If there is no large water flow, the rat fish will become inactive and become obese and develop diseases. The pH value of water is preferably close to neutral, or slightly acidic water is also acceptable. They cannot be fed well with alkaline water, and they prefer old water. New water will make them prone to skin diseases. Therefore, aquariums dedicated to raising rat fish should not change the water too frequently. This is different from the fact that most South American ornamental fish prefer weakly acidic and soft water.
