Black Strawberry Hermit Crab (Coenobita perlatus)
[Adult Body Color] Body color is mainly deep black, but different individuals may exhibit light black, deep black, or orange-black tones.
[Food] Omnivorous, including fruits, vegetables, crab food, fish, shrimp, cuttlebone, eggshells (for calcium), etc.
[Adult Size] Adult body length is about 5-8 cm (excluding chelipeds)
[Living Environment] Terrestrial, land and water environment (do not keep in deep water)
- They prefer spacious, well-ventilated environments, and can be kept in glass tanks or reptile terrariums.
- Substrate must be used. Coconut coir, bottom sand, and moss are recommended. Driftwood and hiding places (coconut bricks, bottom sand, moss, etc., available on websites) should be provided.
- They are good climbers, so the enclosure needs to be covered to prevent escape.
- It is recommended to prepare a separate molting container with thick coconut coir for them to burrow in.
- Insufficient humidity will cause their gills to dry out, so they need to be sprayed regularly.
- Hermit crabs cannot drink tap water directly, as it will be fatal. Purified water can be used.
- Both a freshwater bowl and a saltwater bowl must be provided.
- You can feed them some fruits, fish and shrimp meat, or specialized crab food daily.
- When changing shells, you can choose shells that are 1-2cm longer and have an opening 1-2cm wider than their old shell.
Hermit crab size is based on the opening size of the shell:
Hermit crabs with a shell length of about 1-2cm have a shell opening diameter of about 0.8-1cm.
Hermit crabs with a shell length of about 2-3cm have a shell opening diameter of about 1-1.5cm.
Hermit crabs with a shell length of about 3-4cm have a shell opening diameter of about 1.5-2cm.
Hermit crabs with a shell length of about 4-5cm have a shell opening diameter of about 2-3cm.
Hermit crabs with a shell length of about 5-6cm have a shell opening diameter of about 3-4cm.
(Note: The color of blackberry hermit crabs changes with each molt; juveniles are generally orange-red.)
