Oscar Cichlid (Astronotus ocellatus)
The Oscar fish, also known as the eye-spot cichlid, is a large cichlid species native to the Amazon River basin in South America. It has a robust body that can reach up to 45 cm in length, featuring distinctive "thick lips" and vibrant colors. Its most distinguishing characteristic is the black "eye spot" with an orange-red ring on its caudal peduncle, which not only confuses predators but also gives it lively nicknames such as "piggy fish" and "flower pig fish." Oscar fish are intelligent and highly interactive, capable of recognizing their owners, earning them the reputation of "aquatic puppies" among aquarium enthusiasts. They are carnivorous predators, feeding on small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects.
Care Guide:
- Provide a sufficiently spacious environment; the tank must be covered to prevent them from jumping out.
- Their main diet should consist of high-quality carnivorous pellets, small fish, and shrimp. Feed them regularly and in portions that can be consumed within 5 minutes, avoiding overfeeding.
- The ideal water temperature is 24-28°C, and neutral water (pH 6.5-7.5) is suitable. Stability is key; when changing water, the temperature difference should not exceed 2°C.
- They are quite aggressive and territorial, making them unsuitable for cohabitation with smaller fish.
- You can provide smooth driftwood and rocks for them to explore and establish territories.
