The Bare-legged Spiny Leafcutter Ant has a burgundy body and is small in size, with queens being only half a centimeter long. Its name comes from the relatively smooth and hairless nature of its legs. The bare-legged spiny leafcutter ant has the highest degree of differentiation among all ants, meaning that its queen, worker ants, and major workers (soldier ants) have completely different body sizes and responsibilities.
They collect fig seeds and pile them in their nest as food reserves. The major workers have a special jaw structure that allows them to easily crush seeds. Due to their unique appearance and habits, they are very popular among ant-keeping enthusiasts. Their seemingly clumsy appearance and the uniqueness of their looks and habits make them a popular subject for observation and research.
