Harvester ants are carnivorous ants. They can keenly detect and track prey, using their middle and hind legs to powerfully push off the ground, launching themselves into the air and rapidly descending next to the prey. They then tightly grasp the prey with their long mandibles and deliver a fatal sting with their tail.
Before eating, they will drag the food they've acquired back to the nest and then slowly enjoy it. Harvester ants are a very rare type of ant that hunts visually. They possess a pair of well-developed compound eyes, giving them sharp vision and a keen sensitivity to moving objects.
