Oak leaves (isopod feed) / South American tank aquascaping material
Oak leaves can be used as a pure natural, pollution-free landscaping material, suitable for South American tank aquascaping, and can maintain acidic water quality.
It can also be used as a hiding place for dwarf shrimp and as food for isopods.
Oak leaves are a very common, safe, and practical material in isopod husbandry, with 4 main functions:
1. Staple food/food source (core function)
• Isopods are detritivores, naturally eating fallen leaves and humus.
• Oak leaves are non-toxic, have moderate fiber, and decompose easily, making them an excellent staple food.
• Prioritize naturally dried, semi-decomposed oak leaves, as fresh leaves are prone to mold.
• Can be left in the enclosure for a long time; they will slowly chew and decompose them.
2. Hiding and security
• Stacked leaves create natural crevices and small spaces that isopods love to hide in.
• Reduces stress, especially suitable for juveniles, recently molted individuals, and breeding individuals.
• Use with bark/coconut shells for better results.
3. Moisture retention and environmental stability
• The layer of dead leaves locks in moisture, slows evaporation, and maintains humidity in the enclosure.
• Helps form a micro-ecosystem, benefiting the growth of humus and beneficial bacteria.
4. Calcium supplementation and molting aid
• Oak leaves contain calcium and minerals, which, combined with cuttlebone, aid molting.
• The decomposition process releases nutrients that are utilized by both isopods and the substrate.
