While training under his father, Shōzan Watanabe, he researched glazes and began firing small bonsai pots around 1978. He primarily creates glazed bonsai pots and suiban (water basins) using the tatara (slab-building) method. His glazes are diverse, mainly including Oribe, kin-yu (celadon), white kōchi, yellow kōchi, and ruri-yu (lapis lazuli glaze), with various intermediate shades. He is a Tokoname bonsai pot artist who creates pots and suiban of various sizes, from small to large, in various clays. His artist name is read as "Kazuhiro" but is commonly read as "Ikko."
