Opsariichthys kaopingensis

Vari-scaled minnow (Opsariichthys variabilis) is a dream fish among native fish enthusiasts.

Keeping them requires high oxygen levels and a large tank. The tank bottom should be covered with dark fine sand. This fish likes to jump, so the tank must be covered. Additionally, since it is a stream fish, a wave-making system should be used if conditions allow to simulate its natural habitat. Its habits and morphology are quite similar to those of the Broad-finned minnow (Zacco platypus).

Vari-scaled minnows begin to color up when they reach about 8 cm in length, usually around 3 months of age, after growing to a certain stage. The coloring process may be gradual, transitioning from faint hues to vibrant colors. Ensuring suitable water temperature, clear water quality, and appropriate tank and water flow conditions, along with providing high-protein, nutrient-rich food, will further promote coloring.
