Green-lipped Black Apple Pitcher Plant
Nepenthes are now widespread in Borneo, the Moluccas, New Guinea, West Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Thailand. The species epithet "ampullaria" comes from the Latin "ampulla", meaning "flask". The difference from other insectivorous species is that its insectivory has been degraded and it has become partially scavenger, turning to collecting and digesting fallen leaves in insect pitchers. Therefore, the vegetarian nature allows a large number of organisms to live in it, forming a special symbiotic relationship, and these organisms can provide nitrogen sources for Nepenthes.
Nepenthes ampullaria Jack) blooms once a year for one to two weeks. Its flowering period coincides with that of many other pitcher plants, so it can easily form hybrids with other species . Green-lipped Nepenthes nigra is one of them.
