He apprenticed under his father, Watanabe Shōzan, while researching glazes, and began firing small bonsai pots around 1978. His work primarily consists of slab-built glazed bonsai pots and water basins. The glazes are diverse, mainly Oribe, Jun glaze, White Kouchi, Yellow Kouchi, and Ruri glaze, with various intermediate colors. He is a Tokoname bonsai pot artist who creates unglazed, small, and large bonsai containers, both pots and water basins.
